New Recipe Adjustment Features
Thu, Sep 19th

foodious has been hard at work on some rad new features, which I'd like to show in a series of four images. It's all about recipe customization, in real time, and being able to see your macros change as you make modifications to the recipe.

IMAGE 1:

Here's the original recipe ... it's for a salad (Brussels Sprout Citrus Slaw).

A couple of things to note:

  • The macros for this recipe display directly to the right of the ingredients.
  • The protein content is low, just 6 grams. I'd like to change that.
  • The recipe calls for 1 tbsp of granulated sugar. As a low-sugar consumer, this is not going to work for me.

I selected the "Add Ingredient" button and will add 1 lb of shredded chicken breast.

A couple of things to note:

  • The ingredient name auto-completed to "chicken breast".
  • The amount was "1".
  • The measure was "lb".
  • The preparation note was "shredded".

Now that the chicken has been added, I'd like to make some modifications to the recipe in real time, and see how it's macros change.

The green highlighting on the macros is showing what macros change as you make adjustments to the ingredient quantities.

A couple of things to note:

  • Since i added the chicken, the protein has increased to where I'd like it to be.
  • I bumped the sugar way down by removing 75% of it.
  • I removed the salt, as I rarely salt my food.
  • I like Brussel sprouts, so I bumped that up. As I adjust the ingredient quantities, the macros that are updated flash green for a second and update their values, along with a little note below the macros indicating how much of which ingredient was added.
  • I gave my modified recipe a name "Added Chicken for Protein" and clicked "Save Recipe".

Here's the final recipe, dialed in exactly for me.

When i'm on foodious.com, and I go to this recipe page, I'll be given the option of which recipe I'd like to view .. either (a) the original version or (b) my modified version.

A couple of things to note:

  • Near the top, you'll see "Viewing Recipe" ... after you save your modified recipe, you can see either the original recipe or it's modified version.
  • You can continue to make adjustments to this recipe modification, or go back to the original and create an entirely new one.
  • Your recipe mods will appear under your profile via a link in the left nav called "Recipe Mods".
  • When you save the recipe, it will re-load it to re-compute the rest of the nutritional data charts on that page.

Here's a link to the recipe if you'd like to play around with the same ingredients. Bon appetit!
