PREPARATION
1.
Preheat oven to broil.
2.
PREPARING THE SLOPPY JOE MIX
3.
Set a large pot over medium-low heat. Add a few drops of extra-virgin olive oil, and sauté the garlic for a minute or two until just fragrant and very light golden brown.
4.
Add ground beef, increase heat to medium/medium high, and cook until no longer pink, breaking apart and stirring as meat cooks. Drain grease from meat.
PREPARING THE SAUCE
5.
While meat is browning, make sauce.
6.
In a medium bowl, stir together tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, and freshly ground black pepper, to taste, until well combined.
7.
Pour over browned meat, stir, and simmer for a few minutes until warm.
PREPARING THE BUNS
8.
Place the buns, face up, on a baking sheet.
9.
Broil the buns in the preheated oven for 2-4 minutes, or until they begin to crisp.
ASSEMBLING
10.
Spoon a few spoonfuls of the sloppy joe mixture onto the bottom bun.
11.
If desired, you can top with a slice of cheese and place back into the oven for 1 minute to allow cheese to melt.
